Upcoming Releases - November 2011

So here we are, rounding the bend into what I like to call "good movie season". Basically, it's the time of year when we get a flood of decent to AWESOME flicks designed to remind people like me that the good stuff exists out there.

Of course, not all films that come out this time of year are ones I'll particularly enjoy or want to see, but bets are on they are good films nonetheless (and by good, I mean capable of earning money and/or award nominations).

So let's take a look at the next couple of Award-fodder months and see what's rolling out:

16th:
THE DESCENDANTS
The new George Clooney starring heavy-hitting drama will likely appease Clooney fans, since drama always has been a strong suit and his base followers of older women will appreciate a good looking older man continuing to love and support his dying wife. Is this film already on the award list for next year? I'd put money on it. Personally, this screams Bridges of Madison County to me and I have no interest in seeing it. I'll likely hit it up anyway, because it's George and you can't say no to George.

18th:
HAPPY FEET TWO
Aw, so cute, more penguins happily dancing. Since the original was a hit, I'd wager this will be too. Besides, it's the holidays and families like to go to movies this time of year. Of course, I'm concerned over how it's going to compete with....

TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART ONE
Excuse my non-Twilight fanship as I scoff at having to endure another one of these films. I know I have my fanship movies that get equally as scoffed, so I'm not one to judge, I just hate these films so much. The entire series reads like a bad romance novel and I find nothing at all redeemable in them. Besides, I'm still completely confused how a Vampire can impregnate anyone... aren't they, uh, dead? I seriously cannot wait for this one to be over. Hopefully the new craze (The Hunger Games) will illicit a less nauseating response from me.

23rd:
ARTHUR CHRISTMAS
Actually looking forward to this one. Some Aardman action with the voices of Hugh Laurie, James McAcoy and Bill Nighy? I'm in. My only concern is that it's a Sony and they're last few animations haven't been, uh, that good: Planet 51, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Surf's Up, Open Season, etc. The trailer is fun though and I can never say no to Hugh Laurie.

HUGO
Martin Scorsese doing some animation? Rock on! Who's next? Spielberg? (Oh wait...)But I don't have any real idea what the film is about or what to expect from it. I'm really trusting solely on Scorsese to bring his awesomeness to it and that it'll be a good film. I'm not going to even do research into this one. In Scorsese I trust and I'll leave it at that.

THE MUPPETS
I never got into the Muppets. While I've got nothing against them, I have no strong feelings about this movie at all. I might see it eventually, just because it looks like fun. I do have friends, however, who are giddy with glee over this film, so I support their squeals of joy and wish them all a good time with characters they enjoy. Don't suck, Muppets! I got a lot of friends counting on you...

A DANGEROUS METHOD
A film with Michael Fassbender always hits my radar and makes the "must-see" list. Besides his good looks, Michael is posing to become a major player in the film world with his quite awesome amount of talent, so I like to keep tabs on these up-and-comers and almost-theres. Until he gives me cause, I'll be at all Fassbender films. More than that, the cast rounds out with Keira Knightley and Viggo Mortensen, who I never turn down either. Director Cronenberg is also a good bet on this film, after Eastern Promises and A History of Violence. This is one of those films you can bet will get some Golden Globe noms and likely some Academy attention.

MY WEEK WITH MARILYN
The trailer really struck me on this film because Michelle Williams was so eye-catching and wonderful. Clearly the Weinsteins are pushing for some acclaim, but they usually have good taste and their films are worth it, so count me in on this one. Plus, Emma Watson is in it and I gots to keep tabs on the HP kids.

RAMPART
A glanced at it. It has an interesting cast, but the director is new, I can't find a trailer and it sounds like another drugs cop beat down by the system and going rogue type drama. Word out of TIFF is lukewarm at best. Probably not something I'll go out of my way to see.
